Hardcoal Chronicles 40th

1973 - 2013

The Image Roster
It’s all in the (Call) Numbers

Begun in December 1973, The HARDCOAL CHRONICLES is the work of only one photographer,
Scott D. Herring, who is entirely self-taught, self-funded, and the only of the Region’s five generations of Anthracite Photographers who was not initially paid by coal and/or railroad companies to begin this pursuit.

The 35th Year (2008) inventory count yielded 146,197 images comprising The HARDCOAL CHRONICLES — an astoundingly large, but very deceptive number: It represents all images, in all four formats: 35mm slides and negatives, Medium and Large Format negatives and positives, both B&W and Color; and, most-recently, digital (despite its archival unreliability). Yes, it sounds like a lot of pictures, but that large number does not represent all different subjects all in unique views; instead it reflects the compounding of endless layers of scrutiny from locational (site) overviews all the way down to parts details and machine builder plates and ancillary aesthetics.

In addition, it was neither the intention nor realistic possibility that one self-funded photographer could cover the entirety of Anthracite visual issues, even during these waning years of landscape evidence. So, it was always with great relief that Scott saw periodic proof that other individuals and/or groups had preserved elements of Regional importance, freeing him from devoting very limited time and money to yet-another item on his list. Instead, he could then focus on long-ignored items and the neglected broader scope of Anthracite impact outside the Region. It is now estimated that the 40th Anniversary inventory after the year 2013
will exceed 162,500 cataloged images.
