Hardcoal Chronicles 40th

1973 - 2013

The Image of Anthracite in Other American Landscapes

In the quest to put Hardcoal in context, historic leads and landscape indicators were followed throughout America. Nearly four decades of dedicated travel was undertaken to investigate promising place names, topographic map indications, and verbal leads, to document the changing and mostly disappearing world of industrial cultural landscapes like Anthracite.

Always endeavoring to follow the railroad tracks ensured that even those features lost to other references might be found. In the course of this pursuit, subjects unrelated to coal culture, from New Mexico to Maine, were all committed to film. Happily through the years, an eclectic array of chance sightings grew into a mandate of expanded subject parameters. Landscapes which were disappearing like Anthracite demanded to be recorded, too. Subjects as diverse as Christmas, Route 66-style storybook gas stations, commercial signs on brick buildings, craftsmen of antiquated technology, plus barnyards and their moo-cows, now join wildflower fields in finding a home in The HARDCOAL CHRONICLES.
